How to Sell Digital Products Through Google Checkout

Google checkout is a great way to manage online sales. It is similar to PayPal but the processing fees are cheaper. Their processing fees are significantly lower than most other major credit card processing outlets, standing currently at 2% per sale, and if you already have a Google Account to manage your Gmail, Blogs, Webpages, etc., then Google Checkout just makes sense because it further helps you tidy and better manage all your website activity.

One issue I ran into recently was how was I going to use Google Checkout to sell my non-tangible digital products? So far it’s been easy to charge for items and then ship them by hand, but how was I going to install an online file delivery system?

This was harder than I expected!

Well, Google has documentation on how to do this, one was to use the HTML API to set up my download link, but this was a problem seeing that users could discover this link by viewing my source code. Then they recommended using XML instead of HTML, but for some reason this proved to be too complex to me.

But as a designer who is familiar with PHP I discovered I could perform the same thing that they recommended with XML also with PHP.

So how I approached this problem was to have the buy-it-now button link to a back-end PHP file where I set-up all my item information and download URL information. The I have that back-end php file send the customer on through to the Google Checkout process with the data.

After that I had to consider that once the user purchased my digital product, he shouldn’t be given the absolute URL to the download. What were to happen if the customer passed off this URL to whomever they pleased? This would be another security gap!

So I created another back-end PHP file to secure the download location, and had Google send the customers there with a special key that granted them access. These keys are randomized in special ways and stored into a database, so when the user goes to the special download page it checks to see if the key attached to the download link is also in the database. If it is then the user gets to download, if not then they are warned that the software costs money and they are visiting this page by mistake or in vain.

I hope my explanation of approach helps you in your journey!
