Finding Niche Markets is Easier Than You Think

By Dale E East

The art of finding niche markets that you can market to is one of the primary skills that you must have in order to make any kind of profit from the Internet. To be able to find niche markets that have potential we first have to be able to identify a niche market. Then we can find them much easier.

What is a niche market?

Wikipedia defines a niche market as ‘a focused targetable portion (subset) of a market sector’. This definition tells us that a niche is not a broad market but a small sub sector of that broader market.

Let’s use an example here to illustrate what a niche market is.

For this purpose we will say that you want to build a business that deals with dogs. The term dog is far too broad and would not be a niche market. Since it is so broad it is not targetable so it’s not a true niche. A niche would be a smaller, targetable sub sector of the dog market. Dog training, dog collars and dog kennels

would all be sub sectors that can be targeted and considered niches.

Now that we know what a niche is, how do we find one?

Finding niche markets doesn’t have to be that hard. It’s simply a process and knowing where to go and how to find the tools needed will make it easier and more enjoyable.

First let’s do some looking around for ideas. Let’s start with Google and type in a broad phrase or keyword that you want to investigate. If we type in dog, we find there are about 418 million pages for the term dog. At the bottom of the page there are more suggestions. Lets try dog names. Now there are over 14 million results. Better but a long way from a true niche.

If we do this exercise again we find puppy names and that search turns up a little over a million pages. Now we are getting closer to a niche that we can work in. But at the bottom of the page again we see boxer puppy names. If we search for Boxer Puppy Names we find 242,000 pages for that term. Now we have a niche that we can work in.

Now we head over to Word Trackers free Keyword Suggestion tool. We type in puppy names and we see that Boxer puppy names only gets about 3 searches so we look and see that female puppy names gets over 300 searches. Female Puppy Names has 394,000 related pages on Google so that is a decent niche to target.

Let’s check again and see what our real competition looks like. Now we’ll do a search for “female puppy names” in quotes. This is an exact phrase search and we will see that there are a little over 12,000 web pages that are optimized for that specific phrase. We now have a niche market that we can target and have a good chance of success in.

Finding niche markets doesn’t have to be hard and it really doesn’t have to take that much time. By combining some creative thinking and a little bit of research you can uncover all kinds of niches that are ripe and ready for you to build a business in.

The Finding Niche Strategy For Long-Term Success

By Roy Primm

Niche strategy equals success, especially the top niches. For example, we’ve all heard about the importance of having niche ideas in today’s highly competitive marketplace. Niche marketing continues to grow by leaps and bounds.

Yes, if you want to survive now you’ll have to find ways to separate yourself from the crowd. You must have a niche strategy to help you find the best niche. You must go on a finding niche campaign. The last thing you want to have now is a me-too type business, product, or service. This is especially true if you have a multi-million or billion dollar competitor anxious to swallow your business whole in one gulp.

The experts all agree, having a new niche is always the best way to go. They’re countless books and software programs showing how to find and develop a niche. With all the hype about finding and developing a niche product or niche service, there’s one drawback. Most niches including niche websites don’t last that long. So, the missing piece to the puzzle is – how do you give that niche you find longevity?

This is an important step, because most niches can take months or even years to find, develop and take to market. Unfortunately many people find when they complete all the steps to take there niche to market, one of three things happen.

1. The market demand for the product, service or idea dries up.

2. A crowd of competitors have joined your party with knock-offs.

3. Your capital runs out before you have a chance to succeed.

These are the potential hurdles every person who chooses to start a business experiences. When it comes to a niche ideas, one major hurdle is how to choose a long-term niche… with staying power!

Here’s 3 Steps to Creating a Long-Term Niche:

1.Choose a niche idea that supplies or solves people’s long-term needs instead of their short-term wants.

What people need is food, shelter, the need to feel secure, to earn a living, etc. This is especially true now, when money is tight. Because the first thing people cut back on are wants and other impulse expenses.  Why? Because they’re saving their money to supply their needs. Think about it.

2. Find out what your competition doesn’t like to do, can’t do, or is neglecting to do – and you do it.

This technique works especially well if your competition is larger than you are. By being a smaller company, you  can give more personal service, make changes or adjust to customer demands faster.  Use these benefits to your advantage.

3. Find a market of people you like to serve.

This is where many novice entrepreneurs fall.  They focus on places where they hope they can make money instead of focusing on service. Don’t fall for this rookie mistake.  Finding a market you love serving makes you more prone to stick around for the long hall. Your niche idea will have longevity almost automatically. Why? Because  you’ll have longevity because you like the people you serve.

These are the simple but powerful steps to giving any niche idea you find more longevity. There’s a wise saying that states, “only the strong survive.” That statement is especially true now in this crazy economy. Applying my 3-steps will help give you a specific niche strategy and help give you long-term success.

Why Build a Niche Website?

Why Build a Niche Website?

Quality vs. Quantity

Larger is not necessarily better. Many people tell you to make tons of content but fail to explain exactly what quality content is. The biggest problem with growing extremely large is a complete loss of focus.

Adding on Cheap Businesses

If a person is a good web designer and understands a decent amount about how search engines work they can easily add SEO to their bucket of services. Hosting is also cheap too. Some people will add on a couple services to website design and call themselves a full service interactive media company.

It may sound impressive, but how often do you use the phrase “full service interactive media” in your daily routine? Next to zero I bet. So the message is harder to spread. It is far easier to be successful if you sharpen and focus your business efforts vice spreading your efforts across many industries.

Focusing in on an Industry

Telephone numbers were given 7 digits because human memory sharply drops off as you add much more data. In any industry people will usually only remember one or two products or companies.

Think of the name of a copy machine company. Think of another… it gets a bit harder as you go down the list.

There are full service internet marketing firms, and within the internet marketing industry there is the SEM community. The SEM community has the pay per click side and the organic search result side.

The organic search results side of SEM consists of keyword research, copywriting, link building services, and link brokers. If you look in DMOZ there are over 800 generic or full service SEO firms.

Each of the generic SEO firms probably has a less than one in one hundred chance of being a well known industry leader within the industry.

The Ranking Problem with Line Extension

If you make a huge website then many pages will be multiple links deep into the site. Many of the links into your site will usually be linked to the home page.

Having only one home page on a huge site vice having five or six really focused sites means you will probably only have one chance to rank well for really competitive phrases. You will need to build extreme link popularity into your site to have your inner pages rank really well for competitive search terms (unless the inner page is an extremely unique well positioned idea).

The Linking Problem with Line Extension

The web is a big social network. Many quality links are based upon business partnerships. If you host, design, and promote sites you make it hard for hosts, designers, or marketers to link to you. People do not generally like to link to their competition, especially their unfocused competition.

If you pick a focus on a single industry it is much easier to make business partnerships with other sites around your business idea that do not directly compete with you.

Inside the Consumers Mind

As you add to your services you lose the positioning you have for your other services. When Google bought Blogger they left the name Blogger alone. When you think Google they want you to think search. When you think search they want you to think Google.

While line extension may at first seem like a good idea it often hurts businesses more than it helps them. When Heinz became ketchup it lost it’s position as pickles. Right now I can tell you who I would refer you to for almost anything in SEO because certain people have branded themselves that way. Certain people become synonymous with ideas within their industry.

Breaking Down the SEO Industry

When I think of SEO there are really only a few companies that come to mind (out of many hundreds or thousands of companies). When I think of each of the market segments I usually think of one or two people or websites.

SEO Copywriting: People argue as to whether or not copywriting or links are more important. Obviously both matter at least somewhat. Jill Whalen positioned herself as “The SEO Copywriter.”

It does not matter if she is right or wrong in her thinking how important SEO copywriting is. If you think you need an SEO Copywriter then you likely will end up running into Jill Whalen.

Linking is Important: In that whole arguement about whether llinking or copywriting is more important John Scott branded himself as the person who thinks links rule the world. His voice has been rather crass and perhaps too loud for some, but he has established a brand. If you believe in the power of links there is a good chance you will run into John Scott.

Announcing Websites: Sometimes landing a big client can make your name. Eric Ward helped build the Amazon.com linking campaign.

He has since worked for many other large national or international sites with his website announcement service. If you need to announce your website it is likely you will run into Eric Ward.

Link Brokers: There are only a handful of large link brokers on the web. I can think of maybe a half dozen off hand.

By taking Google to court for lowering his PageRank SearchKing made himself the ridicule of many jokes. He now has a gigantic new office. He too was laughing all the way to the bank.

Sometimes adding on extra things to combat problems within your industry boosts your popularity and may define you as a leader within your industry. Recently Google began to stop parsing link popularity on some sites that were selling links and Jarrod Hundt came up with a service called BlockedPR.com that tracks these sites.

Odds are that if you need a link broker you stand a good chance of running into the PRadNetwork or TextLinkBrokers.

Keyword Research: Thought to be too small or too focused of an idea by many SEO firms, keyword research became a lucrative field for Dan Thies.

Dan Thies snatched the opportunity to become synonymous with keyword research. He has just about zero competitors and if you need help with keyword research you will likely stumble into Dan Thies.

Article Summary

The web is a social structure where many links are based on business partnerships.

If you have a huge broad sweeping business it is usually harder to get free links.

People usually only remember a few names in any field.

Most people become successful by focusing their energies vice expanding their offerings.

How to Build a Niche Website

By Shannon Dipple

You know something, don’t you? Think about it. You do. What is your passion? Your interest? What do you already know a lot about? This is your niche. This is the foundation for building a niche website.

Behind every successful website is a “webmaster” (that’s you) who knows a lot about a certain topic and is passionate about it. The unsuccessful websites… well, those are sites that are built on the premise of trying to make money. They have little substance behind them, and human visitors can tell right away. Click! They’re gone.

There are five basic steps to building a niche website:

1. Choose a topic you are passionate about
2. Choose a topic that has high demand and low supply (a great domain name!)
3. Choose a topic that has at least 250 high quality key words (this will give you traffic)
4. Decide where you will host your site (one that provides support, SEO services, links, graphics, etc)
5. Write great content

But don’t we want to make money on our niche website? Of course, but that will never happen until you have enough quality content and traffic. Without those two pieces, you are behind the eight ball already.

Let’s look at each of these steps a bit further.

1. Choose a topic you are passionate about

My website is about primary education. I am a teacher, I love what I do, and I know a lot about it. It is a natural site for me to develop. I learn more about my topic every day simply because I am in the trenches with it. I have to keep up on the latest educational research, laws, teaching strategies and state/federal requirements. But it is not a chore for me. Why? Because I am passionate about it.

Think about what you love to do. Often people want to start a website because they do not love their job – they want the potential financial freedom site ownership offers. That’s okay. I just happen to be one of the people who does love what I do. The successful sites are focused on the webmaster’s niche – a very specific topic that they love to learn about and share with others.

The search engines will also “pick up” on your great content. Spiders recognize when human visitors are pleased with your site by how long they remain on it and where they click within it (or out of it!).

Your passion = great content = happy search engines = more traffic = monetization!

2. Choose a topic that has high demand and low supply

A fatal mistake in building a niche website is that people forget about the “niche.” Some people rush into building a site about something they love, but forget to check basic supply and demand. Even if you write great content, you will likely never be able to get to monetizing if your topic has more supply than demand.

Your topic must be winnable at the search engines. You don’t want too much competition for what you have to offer. You don’t want to be the only one out there, but if you build a site on, say, physical therapy, you will likely never be found at the search engines.

Make that broad concept into a niche: traveling-physical-therapy…pediatric-physical-therapy…aquatic-physical-therapy…All these concepts have great potential to become a niche website that makes money. Check Google Adwords to see if I am right – that’s where I got them from!

3. Choose a topic that has at least 250 high quality keywords

Your niche website should not be so narrow that you are left with very little to write great content about. Your goal will be to eventually have at least 150 or more pages on your site. You also want those pages to be winnable at the search engines, so you must have high quality keywords for them.

This is where you will have to do some more research. There are many tools out there that can help you do this. You must have something to help you find the absolute best keywords to write your great content about. Remember, your great content pleases the search engines which brings in the traffic that eventually will make you money!

4. Decide where you will host your site

There are many hosting services for web sites, but they are not all of the same quality. Again, you must do your research to get the results you want (which is a great niche website that will make you money). The free hosting services are extremely limited in their support. You are pretty much on your own. Most free hosting services are not geared towards sites that will eventually dominate a niche market (and that’s where you want to be!).

Some would-be-webmasters try to go the route of blogging. The reality is that very few bloggers make any money on their site. A blog is not viewed as a reliable, trusted source of information. It is better to include a blog as a part of your niche website.

There are other hosting services that cost a bit of money up-front, but at least get you into the game. For most of them, you have to know some HTML and CSS. You can build your pages using Dreamweaver or another web design software, but if you don’t know how to put the “language” in, you will have just wasted nearly $250.00. If this is you, then you probably need something with more guidance.

You want to look for a hosting service that gives you more than just hosting your site. The best places offer you tools to guide your web-building process. For a successful website, you will need great content, but in addition you will need graphics, file managers, linking services, submissions to search engines, and tools to analyze your pages for optimization…and so much more.

Once you decide where to host your site, it is time for step 5:

5. Write great content

Everything up to this point has been your research and preparation. Now you are prepared begin your site and share it with the world.

You have at least 250 key words that have solid potential to be found at the search engines. You have a great niche concept that is winnable. You have a hosting site ready to go that supports you and will help ensure your chances of success.

So what are you waiting for? It is time to start writing that great content and make your knowledge sell!

Oh yes, money… once you start getting at least 30 visitors a day to your site, you can start to think about adding monetization options like Adsense and affiliate links. Don’t even think about going there first. Get to building a niche website that people and search engine spiders want to visit and come back to. If they like you, they will eventually reward you. Click!
