website bandwidth limit?

i recently hosted a website. it worked for an hour and after that the free hosting service provider disabled it saying that i have exceeded the bandwidth allowed. How should i eliminate this problem?. i have some pics on the website. Should i compress it or soemthing so that it wont cross the limit again? how will i do it?

Some web hosts do what is called “over-selling.” They advertise very cheap accounts and then once you’ve spent hours building the site, they suspend you and tell you that you need to upgrade to a more-expensive account due to the excessive use of bandwidth, processor cycles, or resource (memory) used.

That could be the case for you, as you can have quite a few images before you run into bandwidth problems. Bandwidth issues are usually more a function of how many visitors you are getting. Your images could be an issue if they are really large; say, more than 1200 pixels wide or tall, and there are enough of them. If that’s the case, you could switch to smaller images or thumbnails linked to larger versions.

If your host will allow the site to be live again, you can use a site like WebSiteOptimization.com (http://www.websiteoptimization.com/services/analyze/index.html) to analyze your site and see where the problem is coming from.

Bottom line, you may need to change hosts…there are a lot of reputable ones that offer unlimited bandwidth for shared accounts, but most have limits on CPU cycles and memory. They have to in order to prevent one or two accounts from slowing down the works for everyone else on the server.
